Provenance
Gift of Mrs. C. Kemble Baldwin, Scarsdale, New York. A 1946 letter in the Penn Rare Book & Manuscript Library files state that the desk was originally in Franklin's business office. When the business was sold, Mr. Atkinson, a partner, purchased it and then stayed in the family until it was given to the University.

Franklin's years of absence from an active role in his business make it impossible to state confidently that the desk was used by him, though its reputed presence in a building owned by him could have led to that assumption.
