Celebration! of Benjamin Franklin, Founder

Procession, seminar, and luncheon with the theme, Franklin and Architecture: Building the City to commemorate Benjamin Franklin’s 299th birthday.

There will be a morning seminar at Franklin Hall in Philadelphia. Franklin’s Philadelphia: Understanding It and Preserving It will be discussed by a group of panelists consisting of Penelope Hartshorne Batcheler, retired architectural historian, INHP; Ann Coxe Toogood, historian, INHP; and John Gallery, executive director of the Preservation Alliance. Bruce Laverty, Gladys Brooks Curator of the Athenaeum of Philadelphia will demonstrate the Philadelphia Architects and Builders website.

At 11 a.m., led by Mayor Street and Ralph Archbold (Franklin re-enactor), nearly 200 fans of Franklin and members of Franklin-founded organizations will set off from 5th and Library Streets (below Chestnut Street) with banners, bagpipers and color guards on a two-block walk to the cemetery. The procession concludes with a graveside ceremony in which participants lay a wreath and Franklinia branches from Bartram’s Garden on Franklin’s tombstone.

At 12 noon, luncheon will be held at the Down Town Club. Robert Venturi and Denise Scott Brown are the featured speakers. Fees for the luncheon are $50 per person or $750 for a sponsored table of 10.
