The Amazing Dr. Franklin
January 16, 2005
One of three Philomel Baroque concerts to honor Ben Franklin's 299th birthday. The program explores the musical interests of this leading American citizen, and it also re-creates key features of concert and cultural life eighteenth-century Philadelphia, London, and Paris. As was typical in colonial performances, Philomel's program will include chamber music intermingled with popular tunes of the day.

Philomel's Artistic Director Bruce Bekker feels these concerts are a great way for Philadelphians to honor Benjamin Franklin's birthday week. "Many people are unaware just how deeply involved Franklin was with music," says Bekker. "It's intriguing to discover the role music played throughout his life, and to connect this with the rest of what we know. And it should be fun to hear a program as varied and lively as period listeners would have expected."
